TAX UPDATE

Self Assessment Statements of Accounts have now been issued detailing the second payment on account in respect of 1996/97, due on 31st July 1997. Any amount of interest payable in respect of tale payment of the first installment will also show on the latest statement of accounts. For late payers, interest will be charged from 31st January 1997 in respect of the second payment on account, and from 31st January 1997 where the First installment is     still

outstanding.

Budget Report Despite intense press speculation, the Chancellor left intact the rules governing higher rate relief for pension contributions. The Budget was an interim Budget and no major changes were announced, with the exception of the payment of tax credits abolished for pension schemes. There were very few specific business changes, the main area being higher Capital Allowances for small and medium size business. A

first year allowance has been introduced for the first time since 1993. The allowance will double the normal rate of writing down allowance and will apply to expenditure incurred by small and medium sized companies and unincorporated businesses carried on by individuals alone or in partnership, during the twelve months ended 1st July 1998. Capital items purchased by the business will attract the higher allowance in the first year.

Financial Tips

With some lenders projecting properly price increases of 16% during 1997, end the possible end to negative equity by the end of 1998, there has been a considerable amount of renewed interest in house purchase. Robert Turrell has already seen the re-emergence of 'gazumping' as property prices increase during the conveyenang period. With interest rates still at long term lows, now is an excellent time to lock into a fixed rate mortgage as interest rates are expected to increase during the next few years.

AS A SELF-EMPLOYED MUSICIAN, most lenders will offer you a mortgage equivalent to the average of your last three years' NET income. That is the income you are taxed on. NOT your total fees received. If your accountant is doing what he is paid for, your taxable income wit be very low. However, this causes problems when you need a mortgage.

The greater your deposit, the more options you will have available. There are a great number of lenders, including High Street lenders, including

High Street Banks and Budding Societies that can be more flexible and work on affordabity as opposed to a percentage of net income. These mortgages are not scalable direct to the general pubic, but only through applications introduced through professional financial planners. Graeme Blair Financial Planning Ltd, under the direction of Robert Tune&, looks after in excess of 500 musicians, many of whom have had their mortgages placed by Robert.
