MASis pleased to announce the launch of
a dynamic new service Keyboard
Connection, a self-contained part of MAS
specialising in keyboard players of all genres. Keyboard Connection project Co-ordinator, Charlotte
Tomlinson, is herself a pianist. She recognised the need for a similar service to the one that MAS provides to its existing clients but tailored to the specific
requirements of pianists, accompanists, repetiteurs
and keyboard players in general. The distinct indifference of artist agents to keyboard
players other than soloists, alongside the difficulty that so many people
seem to have in finding one, led Richard Smith in conjuction
with Charlotte Tomlinson to formulate a way to fill this gap in the market
place and solve the problems of both parties. |

Keyboard Connection has its own telephone number - 01306 500033 - The service will be up and running
from 1st December 1999.

Get online ... making the most of our
Website When our website was set up in September
1998, all CVs we held at that time were automatically transferred onto the
website in the 12- line format we use for the CV publication. If you have not updated your CV since it
will probably be out of date by now, and may not do you justice! You are missing out on an opportunity for
free marketing. On the website there is a much larger
allocation of space than in the 12 line CV publication. On the website you can have almost
unlimited space and links to your own website or to other sites such as a your quartet, quintet, agent or suchlike. If you have not sent us an updated CV
since September 1998, please feel free to do so. Alternatively log on to our
website at www.maslink.co.uk to see what is currently there under your
name. If you have not already got a CV
in the publication or on the website, send us one if you would like to be
included. You can also add a photo to
be scanned in, but please make sure it is not too dark, and large enough to
be seen clearly i.e. bigger than passport size. Webstatistics... in October
1999 our site received an average of 228 hits per day. |
Playwell ... With Preventative Self Help! Over 75% of musicians have aches and pains, stresses,
overuse and repetitive strain injuries or other problems sometime during
their playing lives! Don’t you wish
you could help yourself when things go wrong, or that you had the choice to
see specialists who really understand what a musician’s life is like and will
answer questions in a way relevant to your instrument? The British Performing Arts Medicine Trust is reinstating free assessments in London and Manchester. These now include alternative medicine such
as general holistic therapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, Alexander, Feldenkreis, and voice therapy, along with standard
medical care and counselling.
Subsidised by the Musicians’ Benevolent Fund, the Musicians Union and
Equity, they are held at BPAMT, 196 Shaftesbury
Avenue, WC2 8JL. Helpline 0207 240
4500. Typical of alternative practitioners is Liz Andrews. After 25 years as a freelance violist (as
Liz Polunin), and 12 as a chiropractor, she wrote Healthy Practice for Musicians (Rhinegold). She
hates being wrenched about herself, so only uses the most gentle of
manipulative techniques and teaches you how to help yourself. She often uses a camcorder to help you see
yourself in action, and has been known to come to rehearsals and into
orchestral pits to watch you play to see what’s gone wrong. |

Musicians can get help with fees for treatments from The
Musicians Benevolent Fund or The Royal Society of Musicians of Great Britain
who have a “Fund for the Support of Decay’d
Musicians” (their words!). The RSM is
also supporting Liz’s two-day Playwell Seminar
held at 10 Stratford Place W1N 9AE, November
22 - 23 on Practical and
Preventative Self help. It is open to
all musicians, college welfare and orchestral health and safety officers,
music advisors and instrumental heads of departments.
