On
19 June 2001 we sadly said goodbye to Malcolm (Smudge) Smith. Malcolm’s
introduction to the world of brass playing began as he played the cornet in
the Salvation Army band at Gloucester Corps. He was taught to play by his
father but eventually went to study at the Royal College of Music where he
won the Brass prize. After
leaving the College he became Principal Trumpet with the BBC Concert
Orchestra where he remained for fourteen years. The next five years saw
Malcolm as Co-Principal with the London Symphony Orchestra with whom he travelled to most parts of the world. Then in April 1991
he became Principal Trumpet with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.
Malcolm performed most of the solo trumpet repertoire with the BBC Concert
Orchestra and regularly performed with chamber music ensembles. He was
Professor of Trumpet at the Royal College of Music and at the Junior Royal
Academy of Music. Between 1970—1992 he was also Professor at Richmond
College. He was known as a musician who would tackle anything, and also a
great diplomat. As chairman of the ROH Orchestra Committee during fraught
negotiations before the closedown, he managed to hold the ring and remain popular
on all sides. Malcolm’s
family wish to thank everyone for their kind words and support over the past
few months. They have requested that
anyone wishing to make a donation should direct it to the Matthew Norriss Benefit Fund. Matthew,
the four yea old son of Peter and Lori Norriss, has been diagnosed with hypogamma
globulineamia.
Something has attacked his immune system and he is in a highly
allergic state; so much so that he is intolerant to any food. Matthew’s treatment at the Breakspear Hospital of Allergy and Environmental Medicine
is not funded by the NHS in their local area, and hospital bills since
February 2001 have exceeded £7000.
Although Lori and Peter are endeavouring to
bring the NHS in line with the rest of the country, it is the contributions
to the benefit fund which have allowed his treatment to continue. Please send any donations to Matthew Norriss Benefit
Fund, City Chamber Orchestra, 1 Norlington Road, London E11 4BE |

A fond farewell from Louise After six and a half years
of dedicated service I have finally hung up my Diary headset and moved to the
sunnier climes of North London. To the many of you I have
met backstage over the years - it was a pleasure; but don’t breathe too
easily, I may be there again… I have a multitude of
memories from my time here. Thanks to all who have
helped create them. Not so much goodbye, but au revoir... Current Staffing: Wind: Tania, Angela, Lauren, Rachel
and Mary String: Abbie, James, Clare and Oliver |
