The Musician's Answering Service

The Only Real Choice

ISSUE 15

March 2001

The specialised and comprehensive recruitment service

for musicians worldwide.

It all started back in April 2000 when I was sharing a bottle of wine with Hazel Province (ROH) and John Beadle (BRB) in a well - known wine bar in Covent Garden….Hazel and John had been discussing for some time the many difficulties and dilemmas facing Orchestra Managements when searching for the ‘right man for the job’ and the similar frustrations and disappointments experienced by so many musicians going through the same process. Being convinced that there must be a better way of doing things that would be to everyone’s advantage, they had conceived the idea of an online recruitment service, dedicated to the needs of musicians. Both being employed full time in already extremely demanding positions, they did not have the time or the resources to develop this idea, so they asked Chris and I at Green Lane Group to help out and design the service.

With Hazel and John never far away offering constant motivation, support and advice we spent a few months talking with professional musicians and Orchestra Managements all over the world to really establish what the profession needs. Our findings were pretty consistent: Musicians asking ‘how do we find out more about an organisation and what they are looking for?’; ‘I have no professional experience but I know I can do the job – ‘ how can I make my application stand out?’; ‘How do I find out about these jobs that aren’t advertised in the paper – what happens if I’m away on tour and can’t get hold of the paper?’ Likewise, Managements’ concerns: ‘it’s so expensive to advertise’; ‘we get so many applications from the wrong type of candidate – but then again we didn’t really state what we were looking for so…’; ‘ how do we know that we have reached as extensive a market as we would ideally like?’

In summary, orchestras want an effective means to promote their organisation and attract the right calibre of applicant for their vacancies. Musicians want free and easy access to that information to enable then to make an informed decision as well as help and advice as to how to make the best of their application.

And so musicianvacancy.com was launched in September 2000 and, basically, it does exactly what it says on the cover! It is a very straightforward service and very easy to use. We don’t sell advertising space – everything you see on the page is relevant and informative and we don’t try and sell you anything or bombard you with junk email.

And ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating’ as they say! Since our launch we have published over 100 vacancies for over 30 organisations spanning 4 continents; we have over 1000 musicians on our notification database and all your feedback has been at best positive and at worst constructively critical!

Don’t just take my word for it, have a look for yourself at www.musicianvacancy.com

The Essential Dixieland/Traditional Jazz Band

Annual Charity Jazz Night

Due to massive demand, Robin Smith and his Dixieland Jazz Band, The Stateside Stompers , will swing at the Rivoli Ballroom once again. During an evening of Jazz, on Thursday 22nd February 2001 at 7.30pm, this energetic nine-piece London band will perform some of the engaging classics of Jellyroll Morton & Benny Goodman. Their two sets will also include a few Stompersfavourites, such as ‘South Rampart Street Parade’ and ‘Tishomingo Blues’, transporting you back to the 1920’s with their high intensity Dixieland sound.

This year The Stateside Stompers will be supported by the more modern sound of The Paul Kimber Quartet featuring the superb Portuguese trumpeter and percussionist Raul D’Oliviera.

It will be an unparalleled social & musical occasion: an unspoilt ballroom from the early 1900’s, a fantastic dance floor and two superb bands performing jazz from the 1920’s to the present day.

The charity they are supporting this year is The Drake Music Project. Along with their patron, Jools Holland, The Drake Music Project raises funds to develop music technology enabling disabled people to compose, create and perform music. All profits will go to this worthwhile cause.

We really do hope to see you there; we only perform publicly once a year, so don’t miss it!

“It don’t mean a thing if you ain’t got that swing…

Doo wap, doo wap, doo wap!”

We've Changed
Our Name!

The East of England orchestra is now called,

ViVA: the orchestra of the east midlands.

ViVA was founded as the East of England Orchestra in 1982 and is the only professional chamber orchestra native to the East Midlands.

Why have we changed?

Two reasons: firstly we have changed our name to better reflect the area in which we work -The East Midlands, not the East of England. Secondly, to communicate our lively approach to music!

ViVAcious ‘...animated...sprightly…’

ViVAce ‘...brisk or lively…’

ViVA ‘...a shout of applause, a cheer or   hurrah….

ViVA remains first and foremost a classical chamber orchestra, but the brand name is now used to identify its four  principal activities:

Sinfonia ViVA: performing music from over four hundred years as well as newly commissioned works for chamber orchestra

Chamber ViVA: music-making in combinations for  duos to octets

Education ViVA: working in, with and for the community

Work ViVA: addressing management and training issues in the workplace through music
