The Musicians’ Marketplace grew out of
a conversation I had with Trevor Burley (cellist and craniosacral therapist)
about how marvellous it is to have acquired new skills and what a shame we
don’t have more clients. Pondering this, I had one of my (rare)
useful ideas - a directory of all of us who have additional skills or
services to offer that can be accessed by every musician who would rather
employ a colleague than trust to luck and the Yellow Pages. It took me a while,
but it’s finally up and running. As well as advertising your services
you can sell things, rent houses, find Bed & Breakfast accommodation and
post news items (forthcoming events, new businesses, successes etc). Still to
come are a book exchange and a forum - they’re exercising my ingenuity a bit.
It’s a very simple concept - anyone who wants to advertise on it pays a £5
registration fee and everything else is free. I put out a quarterly
Newsletter containing short articles and letters that is distributed around
as many orchestras as possible. All contributions are welcome. To salve my conscience regarding the
£5 fee, I’m donating 10% of the profits (if and when there are any) to Music
for Autism — it’s a great charity that does wonderful work and incidentally
provides us musicians with a lot of work. If you don’t know about it, it has
a page on the website, so log on and read. |
Obviously, the more people who
register with the Marketplace the more useful it is to everybody. As an idea
it’s a real sign of the times, as more and more of us find our lifestyles are
less fabulous than we’d like. I’m awestruck by people’s resourcefulness.
There are counsellors, masseurs, decorators, plumbers, IT people,
photographers, instrument repairers and even an online lingerie company. The music world has always been a
supportive community - my great hope is that my website will build on that so
that we really turn our ever changing world into opportunity. Whether you’re a part-time brain
surgeon or you do baby-sitting on Mondays - Sign Up! Article

Diary News In
order for us to run your diary more efficiently, we would like to remind
everyone of the importance of keeping their diary up to date. You can do this at any time over the phone,
by fax or email, or by signing up to mas
online. Recently,
we have received a number of complaints from fixers about clients not keeping
their diary up to date. They are
becoming increasingly frustrated by clients who turn work down after we have
accepted it believing them to be free. Whilst fixers like the fact that we
can accept work, they would like us to remind everyone that turning down work
once it has been accepted by us can often cause them difficulties. We
would also like to remind you that although we can alert you to your messages
via text, we do not have the facility to receive texts. Please do
not send us text messages as any information sent to us in this format
will not be received. Please call or
email us in response. |
