PAXTON HOUSE, BERWICKSHIRE

CLARINETTIST Jean Johnson and pianist Steven Osbourne presented a diverse programme of music well suited to the impressive surroundings of Paxton House’s picture gallery as part of the Music at Paxton festival of chamber music.

Saint-Saens’ Sonat

a in E flat Op 167 for clarinet and piano is a lyrical and often flirtatious piece that explores the full extent of the clarinet’s range and calls for some nimble finger-work. Johnson met these challenges with ease delivering, with Osbourne, a performance full of wit and warmth.

However, Brahms’ Sonata No 1  in F minor Op 120 saw the chemistry between the husband and wife duo move into a different league. Brahms postponed his retirement to write this work for a talented young clarinettist and the scoring here is indicative of a composer at the height of his powers.

Although it bristles with dramatic gestures, there is also poignancy and intimacy, particularly in the reflective andante, as a counterpoint to the energy and dynamism that pulsates through this work. Johnson and Osbourne captured these moods and emotions beautifully in this sparkling, virtuosic performance.

Both musicians shone individually, with Johnson barely pausing for breath in Miklos Rozsa’s note-packed Sonatine for unaccompanied clarinet, and Osbourne giving a masterful interpretation of several of Debussy’s Preludes from Book 1, particularly the atmospheric Footsteps in the Snow and the enigmatic Submerged Cathedral.
