I play modern and period instruments.  Below are some examples of the type of work I have done.

English Chamber Orchestra.

 

I often play Principal trumpet when required.  As Principal I have played:

 

  • Haydn “Drum roll” symphony for Sir Colin Davis at ECO 25th Anniversary concert.
  • The Classical Brit Awards
  • Bach Orchestral Suites for Prince Charles.
  • Handel Fireworks Music at Hampton Court.
  • Stravinsky ‘Pulcinella’ on a tour to South Africa.

Philharmonia Orchestra.

I have played all positions in the trumpet section including Principal, also playing specialist parts such as D Trumpet in Ravel's Bolero.   Conductors:  Dohnanyi, Fruhbeck de Burgos, Hickox, Lazarev, Maazel, Mackerras, Salonen.

English Baroque Soloists, dir. Sir John Eliot Gardiner.

Principal Trumpet - 2000 to present day

  • I have played and recorded some of the most difficult solo trumpet obligati from Bach’s cantatas, as well as Vivaldi’s Gloria for Deutsche Gramophon and works by Handel, and Purcell in many of the world’s major concert halls.
  • In 2004 I played the B minor Mass seventeen times for Gardiner including the acclaimed BBC Prom concert.

As Principal Trumpet

 

  • In 2003 I played Principal Cornet in the Trojans by Berlioz at the Châtelet in Paris.  Now available on award winning DVD.
  • Featured in BBC film Eroica.
  • Performed many concerts including Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Beethoven symphonies, Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Schumann symphonies.
  • Recorded Schubert’s Mass in Ab, Philips.

 

Brandenburg Concerto no. 2.
(modern and natural trumpet)

I have played Bach’s second Brandenburg concerto many times, on modern and Baroque trumpet, in London and across Europe and Australia.  Notable performances of this piece include one on live TV with Robert King & The King's Consort, a live radio broadcast with RAI Turin in Italy, concerts with members of the English Chamber Orchestra, and also with Joshua Rifkin.

I am a regular member of The King’s Consort, often playing principal when required.

  • Live TV Broadcast of Brandenburg Concerto no.2.
  • Recorded the Ruggieri Gloria for Hyperion.
  • Performed solo trumpet obligati including Handel’s L’Allegro.
  • Performed various solo items with the "small group.”

  • A series of concerts for solo trumpet and voice by Purcell with James Bowman.
  • Bach ‘Jauchzet Gott’ BWV 51 with Mhairi Lawson.

  • Featured in the BBC documentary ‘Handel’s Water Music.’
  • Played ‘The Trumpet Shall Sound’ in Paris and London in a live broadcast.

  • Recorded with Cecelia Bartoli a CD of Salieri arias.  Decca.
  • Took the same programme on tour playing in Carnegie Hall N.Y. and Orchestra Hall, Chicago.

As a period instrument specialist I have played principal trumpet in operas by Haydn, Mozart and Handel for Hogwood and Mackerras.
