BIOGRAPHY

Based in London, Toby Deller is a violist with a reputation as a versatile and reliable performer with a thorough experience of a wide range of orchestral repertoire. This ranges from the core classical/romantic literature to modern and contemporary, and includes a variety of choral and music theatre productions.

Toby is also an adept chamber musician. He is violist with the Deller Quartet (www.thedellerquartet.co.uk), a group whose aim is to reintroduce some of the neglected repertoire to concert audiences.

Solo performances have included concertos and recitals, including performances of concerti by Hindemith and Hoffmeister. He was principal viola in all his student orchestras, and in 1997 was awarded first prize in the Warwick University concerto competition.

Most recent tuition was with Rusen Gunes in 2004. Prior to that Toby was taught for several years by the Coull Quartet’s David Curtis at the University of Warwick, and spent 6 months studying with Jean-François Schmidlet at the Conservatoire national de région in Nancy, France.

Toby has also worked as a lyricist - in 1999 he was commissioned to write a cantata for the Millennium celebrations. Beating Time (music by Bev Wragg), for soprano, bass, recorder solo, school and adult choir, and recorder ensemble received its first performance in 2000, conducted by Jeffrey Skidmore with Piers Adams, recorder.
